چکیده

We study the coupled surface and grain boundary motion in biand tricrystals in three space dimensions, building on previous work by the authors on the simplified two dimensional case. The motion of the interfaces, which in this paper are presented by two-dimensional hypersurfaces, is described by two types of normal velocities: motion by mean curvature and motion by surface diffusion. Three hypersurfaces meet at triple junction lines, where junction conditions need to hold. Similarly, boundary conditions are prescribed where an interface meets an external boundary, and these conditions naturally give rise to contact angles. We present a variational formulation of the flows, which leads to a fully practical finite element approximation that exhibits excellent mesh properties, with no mesh smoothing or remeshing required in practice. For the introduced parametric finite element approximation we show well-posedness and, in general, unconditional stability, i.e. there is no restriction on the chosen time step size. Moreover, the induced discrete equations are linear and easy to solve. A generalization to anisotropic surface energies is straightforward. Several numerical results in two and three space dimensions are presented, including simulations for thermal grooving and sintering. Three dimensional simulations featuring quadruple junction points, nonstandard boundary contact angles and fully anisotropic surface energies are also presented.

Variable Thermal Conductivity and Thermal Radiation Effect on the Motion of a Micro Polar Fluid over an Upper Surface

The intent of this analysis is to explore the influence of thermal radiation paired with variable thermal conductivity on MHD micropolar fluid flow over an upper surface. The novelty of the present model is to consider the fluid flow along an upper horizontal surface of a paraboloid of revolution (uhspr) with the porous medium.  This physical phenomenon is described by a set of coupled...

Development of a Moving Finite Element-Based Inverse Heat Conduction Method for Determination of Moving Surface Temperature

A moving finite element-based inverse method for determining the temperature on a moving surface is developed. The moving mesh is generated employing the transfinite mapping technique. The proposed algorithms are used in the estimation of surface temperature on a moving boundary with high velocity in the burning process of a homogenous low thermal diffusivity solid fuel. The measurements obtain...

Finite difference method for sixth-order derivatives of differential equations in buckling of nanoplates due to coupled surface energy and non-local elasticity theories

In this article, finite difference method (FDM) is used to solve sixth-order derivatives of differential equations in buckling analysis of nanoplates due to coupled surface energy and non-local elasticity theories. The uniform temperature change is used to study thermal effect. The small scale and surface energy effects are added into the governing equations using Eringen’s non-local elasticity...

Investigating the Effect of Joint Geometry of the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding Process on the Residual Stress and Distortion using the Finite Element Method

Although a few models have been proposed for 3D simulation of different welding processes, 2D models are still more effective in design goals, thus more popular due to the short-time analysis. In this research, replacing "time" by the "third dimension of place", the gas tungsten arc welding process was simulated by the finite element method in two dimensions and in a short time with acceptable ...
